Nowadays children are brought up in a society where the use of new technology has became an integral part of everyday life. As a natural consequence children are literate in ways that differ from earlier generations.
One of the major reasons for this is the integration of video games in children's everyday life. Video games help children to activate their skills in new dimensions and in different ways. These games give us opportunuty to change something, to try, to fail, not to give up, try again and to have the best result. Video games enhance our imagination, activate our brain to think differently and solve various kinds of problems. There are games that focus on particular skills, such as memory, concentration, logic. And the integration of these kinds of games in language teaching is highly efficient.
Video games are very good brain activators. They make players adjust and program brains to the speed, interactivity, graphic and other factors in the games.
To wrap up I would like to give main advantages of video games in learning. Playing video games:
- augments skills in reading images
- activates combination in several competencies
- enhances thinking skills
- enhances skills at divided attention tasks (monitoring multiple location simultaneously).
There are many very interesting on-line games that involve English language use, vocabulary practice etc. It would be very useful for teachers to be aware of all these games and encourage learners to play them just for fun.
